Restoring .dbx files

I recently compacted my Outlook Express Version 6 folders. When it was finished I only had about four folders and all my original messages are now converted to dbx extensions, which my computer will not open. I read up on the problem, which apparently other users have experienced as well, but could not restore the folders back to outlook express. Looking for any help or support.
